The city of Mandawa, founded in the mid-18th century, was once a city inhabited by families of wealthy merchants. The rich and dominant merchants built massive havelis, adorned with beautiful wall paintings, for the purpose of their residence. However, over time, merchants moved and migrated to other areas, leaving the beautiful havelis in the shadows of anonymity. However, the magnificence of these havelis has not diminished and now they have become an important tourist attraction of the city.
